The Independent is a British national morning newspaper published in London by Independent Print Limited, owned by Alexander Lebedev since 2010. Nicknamed the Indy, it was launched in 1986 and is one of the youngest UK national daily newspapers.

Mermaids, sirens of the sea with breasts and fishtails, are creatures of folklore and myth, and may not be a typical sight on a bank holiday. But earlier this month, while landlubbers celebrated the platinum jubilee, a shoal of mermaids washed up on England’s southern shores. The Foothill High School baseball team defeated the De La Salle Spartans 4-1 on May 13 to win the East Bay Athletic League Championship. The Falcons capped off their EBAL tournament run defeating the 12th ranked team in the state.

Tri-Valley Schools Perform at Championships

All five Tri-Valley high schools competed at the North Coast Section (NCS) Tri-Valley Area Championships on May 14 and competed against some of the best track and field teams in the East Bay. Each school had moments of greatness, scoring high marks in each event.

Switching energy providers always used to be the best way to cut your bills, but now there are no cheap tariffs available, is there anything else you can do to cut costs? Energy bills are rising significantly and Ofgem has just announced it is likely to start reviewing its price cap on a more regular basis. In April they rose by 54 per cent on average and are predicted to rise again in October.

Livermore High School Finishes Softball Season on High Note

The Livermore High School softball team defeated the Granada Matadors 6-3 on May 5. The Cowboys defeated the No. 1 team in the East Bay Athletic League and finished the regular season on a high note. The Cowboys started off the game hot. They scored two runs in the first inning and three runs in the third to take a commanding 5-0 lead early.

Foothill High School's Volleyball Playoff Run Ends in Second Round against Berkeley

The Foothill High School volleyball team was defeated by the Berkeley Yellowjackets by a score of 3-0 on May 5, ending their North Coast Section playoff run. The Falcons season ends as they finish the year with a record of 20-8. The Falcons playoff run started off well with a 3-0 win over American High School. They dominated the Eagles throughout the match and did not let American High come back within striking distance.

Amador Loses Close Lacrosse Playoff Match

The Amador Valley girls’ lacrosse team was defeated by the Davis High Blue Devils 15-14 on May 5 in the second round of the North Coast Section playoffs. Amador defeated Davis High in an earlier matchup this year, but the Blue Devils avenge the earlier loss. The Dons’ NCS run ends in the second round with a loss at home.

Livermore Cowboys Shutout Monte Vista Mustangs at Home

The Livermore High School baseball team defeated the Monte Vista Mustangs 8-0 on April 27. The Cowboys bouncde back after losing back-to-back games and improve to get their 9th win of the year. The Cowboys got up early, scoring two runs in the first two innings. After scoring one run in the fourth inning, the Cowboys would take a commanding 5-0 lead in the fifth inning.

Opinion: Cheap, drunk and vulgar: I’m fed up with anti-Scottish bigotry

Since childhood, I have been aware of hostile jabs mocking Scottish people, on TV and in print, with the source typically being English.
